E China card room arson kills six, suspect dies

YANGZHOU, Jiangsu, April 28 (Xinhua) -- The fire in a chess and card game facility which killed six and injured another 11 people Monday night in east China's Jiangsu Province was an arson and the suspect was killed in the fire, local police said Tuesday.

Yu Changhai, 42, the suspect, set the fire after having a quarrel with Liu Aiyu, the owner of the Aihong Card Room in Yangzhou City, said an unnamed officer with Yangzhou Municipal Police Station.

According to the investigation, Yu came to the card room with a container of gasoline, poured the gasoline onto the ground and lit a fire with a lighter.

But police did not specify why had Yu quarreled with Liu.

One witness told Xinhua that the man had owed about 100 yuan (about 14.7 U.S. dollars) in debt to the chess room owner and was being hounded to pay his debt.

Yu was confirmed dead in the fire according to the result of a DNA test. The test showed a high amount of alcohol in his body, which indicated he was drunk as the incident occurred, the officer said.

An owner of a restaurant near the chess room told Xinhua that the 20 -square-meter chess room had four playing tables. He said that before the fire engines could arrive, he had seen three people rush out of the room, engulfed in flames. The three jumped into a nearby river.

The fire started at about 8:30 p.m., Yao Qili, spokesman of the Yangzhou government, said earlier.

"The fire was put out soon, and firemen pulled more than 10 people out of the burning room," said Yao, adding that six died in the hospital.
