TAIPEI, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Two tourists from the Chinese mainland were killed and three others injured, one critically, in a crane crash accident in Taipei on Friday.
The tragedy occurred at around 1:50 p.m. when a construction crane fell onto a bus carrying 25 tourists and smashed the rear of the bus. The tour group is from Shilong Township of Dongguan City in coastal Guangdong Province.
Li Fuqing died on the spot and Wang Bingkun succumbed to injuries after being rushed to a local hospital.
The three injured included 53-year-old Wang Peiling, 29-year-old Ye Zhitang and 63-year-old Zhang Shihuang.
Wang had head injuries and body bruises, Ye suffered from thoracic spine fractures and body bruises while Zhang had the most severe symptoms with broken ribs, serious head injuries, theracolumbar fracture and serious bruises in chest and lungs.
Zhang is currently in coma and being treated in the Taipei Medical University Hospital's intensive care unit.
Primary investigation showed the crane suddenly fell when a construction company was removing the arms of a tower crane.
Sources with Taiwan tourism institutions said the compensation for the dead, who are all covered by insurance, could reach a maximum of 2 million New Taiwan dollars (59,528 U.S. dollars) and 30,000 New Taiwan Dollars for the injured.
A funeral hall has been set up in the Taipei Medical University Hospital to mourn the dead. Relatives of the dead wailed in great sadness.
After the accident, the mainland-based National Tourism Administration(NTA) contacted the Taiwan Strait Tourism Association through the mainland-based Cross-Straits Tourism Exchange Association.
The Taiwan Strait Tourism Association were asked to assist in treating the injured and consoling the tourists.
The provincial government of Guangdong and city government of Dongguan are arranging matters to help the victims' relatives fly to Taiwan in the shortest time, sources said.
Hau Lung-pin, mayor of Taipei, has been to the spot of the accident and visited the injured in the hospital.
He said the city government has halted the company's construction and pledged to further investigate the liability of the accident.
Earlier local reports said three were killed and three others injured.
The tourists had planned to leave Taiwan Saturday.
