BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Chinese media) -- Two wary migrant laborers refused to have their luggage screened by security guards at a Nanjing railway station in fear that the "big cash" they were carrying might be the target of thieves, a local newspaper reported Sunday.
The two unidentified laborers, who traveled Friday evening from Nanjing back to their home village in the adjacent province of Anhui, ignored guards' request to search their luggage, the Yangtze Evening News reported.
Faced with coercive enforcement, one traveler reluctantly told the guards that they were hiding 60,000 yuan (8,785 U.S. dollars) in cash somewhere in the luggage and didn't want the "big money" exposed to strangers.
The laborers said the money was paid to them by an urban construction subcontractor for seasonal work in Nanjing, capital of economically prosperous Jiangsu Province.
Sensing their anxiety, on-duty police escorted the two to a homebound train after thorough checks of their luggage, the newspaper said.
The two unnamed passengers were among 188 million railway travelers who are experiencing the Spring Festival travel rush. The 40-day travel rush that lasts from Jan. 11 to Feb. 19 is called chunyun in Chinese.
National transport authorities estimated 2.32 billion overall trips during Chunyun, a five percent rise compared with last year.
