Macao SAR chief vows to maintain social stability amid financial crisis

MACAO, Jan. 25 (Chinese media) -- Chief Executive of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Sunday said the SAR government will work shoulder-to-shoulder with the people to guarantee social stability and harmony in the face of the global financial crisis.

He made the remark when delivering his Chinese New Year message.

He said as the SAR government stands side by side with the local people and with the support from the Chinese mainland, the difficulties posed by the credit crunch will be overcome and the a better future for Macao can be created.

Despite the impact of the credit crunch, the island city, the economy of which heavily depends on its gaming sector, still registered a significant year-on-year growth of 31 percent in gaming revenue last year, and the latest figures from the SAR government showed that local unemployment rate for the period between September and November last year stood at just 3.3 percent.

The chief executive also thanked the civil servants and residents who had to work over the holidays, and wished everyone in Macao a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.
