Beijing, Dec.31 -- Construction started yesterday on the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, which will hold the 14th World Swimming Championships in 2011.

The sports center, covering 347,500 square meters, includes a comprehensive sports stadium, a swimming stadium, an outdoor diving pool and a news center.
"Apart from holding world class events, the center will also be a training base for domestic athletes and a public sports venue for local residents," said Yu Chen, director of the Shanghai Sports Bureau.
The sports stadium, which has 18,000 seats, will be the major competition site of the World Swimming Championships in 2011 and other world sporting events.
The swimming stadium, with 5,000 seats, will be the training base for the national and local teams, and open to the public after the championships.
The outdoor diving pool will be on a man-made lake connected to the Huangpu River. The sports stadium will look like a wave and the swimming stadium comprises a series of arches designed to look like dozens of waves crashing on to a beach.
The center was designed by German architecture firm GMP.
