NANNING, April 21 (Xinhua) -- A man surnamed Zhang, 52, was arrested Monday
night in Lipu County of Guilin City, southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous
Region, on charges of attacking an armored bank vehicle.
The police would not release the suspect's given name.
The police headquarter of the region said Zhang, who was driving a
motorcycle and wearing a helmet and a raincoat, sprayed ammonia brine from a
modified fire extinguisher at two security guards standing beside the vehicle at
7:45 a.m. on April 13 in Lipu.
The man fled after the attack, leaving the spray and motorcycle behind. One
of the guards was taken to the hospital to have his eyes flushed, but is in good
condition, local police said.
Nothing was taken from the armored bank vehicle, which belongs to the local
branch of the China Post and Savings Bank.
After eight days of investigation, the police locked on Zhang, a native of
Lipu, as the suspect. They closed in on Zhang at 6:30 p.m. Monday, and arrested
him in Yongfu Village, Shuangjiang Town of Lipu County four hours later.
Local police said Zhang confessed to the crime, but his motives are under
further investigation.
