AKQI, Xinjiang, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese troops
stationed in northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region donated relief
supplies Tuesday to local residents whose homes were damaged in a 5.5-magnitude
earthquake over the weekend.
The supplies, including five tonnes of flour, 100
boxes of instant noodles, 100 suits of army overcoats and rubber overshoes, and
1,000 other garments were sent to Biedieli Village, one of the worst-hit
villages in Akqi County in Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture of Kizilsu.
These were the first relief supplies the village
received. Earlier, the prefectural government allocated 1 million yuan (147,059
U.S. dollars) in relief funds.
The quake, which struck the county at noon Sunday,
affected 15,000 residents and damaged thousands of houses, but no casualties
have been reported.
"I cannot live in my house any longer, it's dangerous
now," said Mada Jumahong, a resident of Biedieli Village, Tuesday. His family is
living in a tent.
"I plan to build a new house with government
allowances," he said.
