One dead, 11 missing in boat accident on China-Myanmar border

KUNMING, Feb. 1 (Chinese media) -- A Chinese boy is dead and 11 people are missing after a boat capsized in a river on the China-Myanmar border Saturday, officials in southwest China's Yunnan Province said Sunday.

The accident happened at around 3:30 p.m. on the lower reaches of the Nujiang River, in Kokang of Myanmar's Shan State, said a spokesman with the city government of Baoshan, Yunnan Province.

Rescuers had retrieved the body of a Chinese boy. Three of the missing were Chinese and eight were from Myanmar. The spokesman said their identities were known, but he refused to give more information about their ages or the connection between them.

The spokesman said Chinese villagers of Mucheng Township borrowed a cargo boat and crossed the river to carry friends from Myanmar to Mucheng. The boat capsized on the way back to the Chinese side.

He said local authorities were investigating whether the boat and its occupants were involved in human smuggling.

"More than 500 Chinese soldiers, policemen and local residents joined the rescue work after calls for help were heard from across the border," the spokesman said.

The search for the missing was continuing. The cause of the accident is not immediately known.
