Van-truck collision kills one in northwest China's Shanxi

XI'AN, Dec. 23 (Chinese media) -- One person died and at least a dozen others were injured on Tuesday when a van and a dump truck collided head-on on a national highway in Shanxi Province, northwest China, the police said.

The van, registered in Huaxian County in eastern Shanxi, was heading for Weinan, a city west of Huaxian when it hit the truck near the Chengjia Tollgate on National Highway 310 at about 7:40 a.m.

Five people were seriously injured, said traffic officer Li Ming. Li was unable to provide a total count of the injured.

One woman, identified as Lei Aifang, died of severe injuries in the Central Hospital of Weinan City. Another injured passenger, whose identity remained unknown, was said to be in a coma at the hospital.

Witnesses said that a dozen passengers were thrown out of the van and suffered injuries of varying degrees. The injured were taken by ambulance to several hospitals.

Drivers of both vehicles were said to be uninjured.
