Seven arrested over crane container fall that kills 11 in SW China

CHONGQING, Nov. 20 (Chinese media) -- Seven people of a construction company,

including managers and safety supervisors, have been arrested here in connection

with a crane accident that killed 11 workers last month.

The seven allegedly allowed workers to be lifted in a goods container and

took no steps to deal with a cable attaching the container to a crane, even

though workers had said the cable was dangerous, an official of the

procuratorate in Wulong County, Chongqing, said on Thursday.

Eleven construction workers died and 12 others were injured after the

container fell at a bridge construction site on Oct. 28 in Wulong.

The steel cable, to which the container was attached, broke and the

container plunged to the deck of the bridge.

An investigation by the Wulong procuratorate showed that the local

government had issued an order at the beginning of this year, urging the company

to stop carrying workers in goods containers. The management failed to comply.

Some workers told the management just three days before the accident that

the cable was in dangerous condition. However, the management allegedly took no

action, nor did it warn workers of the danger.
