Death toll rises to six after molten manganese spill in SW China

CHONGQING, Dec. 26 (Chinese media) -- The death toll rose to six with 12 other workers injured after molten manganese spilled out of an electric furnace at a melting factory in southwest China's Chongqing early Friday, local authorities said.

The accident occurred around 8 a.m. at the Taizheng Manganese Company in Chengkou County. Raw metal being fed into an electric furnace suddenly dropped into the furnace all at once. It caused molten manganese overflow, the county's Party chief Mi Shaolin said.

Four people died on the spot. Two of the 14 injured workers died at about 7 p.m. after treatment failed in the Chengkou County People's Hospital. Another two were still in critical condition, he said.

A team of experts arrived at Chengkou at around 7:30 p.m. via helicopter and vehicles from the Chongqing city proper to the county to help treat the injured.

Medical supplies were immediately dispatched to the hospital despite poor traffic conditions in the mountainous area.

Mi said an initial investigation showed the overflow was accidental and was not caused by lax safety management. However, a final determination has not been made.

The Taizheng Manganese Company, has an annual production value of about 600 million yuan (87 million U.S. dollars). The company has suspended operation for investigation.
