Death toll in bus-motorbike crash in N China rises to eight

HOHHOT, Feb. 2 (Chinese media) -- The death of a

six-year-old girl Monday morning in hospital brought the toll of fatalities to

eight from a bus-motorbike collision in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous

Region, the local public security bureau said.

The girl died after emergency treatment failed. A

further 30 people were injured in the accident which occurred at 4:10 p.m. when

the bus tried to avoid a motorbike but hit it on a highway in Harqin Banner,

Chifeng City.

The two people on the motorbike died as did five

others onboard the bus.

All the injured were taken to two hospitals in Inner

Mongolia. Two seriously injured people were in stable conditions and nine others

who suffered slight injuries were under medical observation. The rest had

returned home.

The public security bureau of Chifeng said Ren

Haijun, the bus driver, has been detained for investigation.

An initial investigation showed the 34-seat bus was

carrying 47people at the time of the accident, the bureau said.

However, passengers and hospital doctors said earlier

that more than 55 people might be onboard the vehicle.
