BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Chinese media) -- The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) never strengthens weaponry and equipment above the country's economic capacity, a senior officer said on Tuesday.
The remarks of Fan Jianjun, a senior officer with the PLA general armament department, came in response to a question at a press conference about the development of China's weaponry.
"China would never take arms races with other nations," Fan said.
He remarked that the general level of the PLA's weaponry and equipment still lagged behind developed nations and could not meet the requirements of safeguarding national security or fulfilling international obligations.
Fan also admitted the PLA is ready to make government-to-government cooperation in military technology with any country in the world based on related UN resolution and principles of equality and mutual benefits.
